Chet Baker - Blood, Chet & Tears
[V6-8798]

Verve Records Stereo 1970

At first, this would seem like the usual commercial fluff similar to Chet's previous World Pacific sessions. But here Chet plays a lot more, and much better here than he did on those recordings from 1965 to 1967. However, he is buried in some outrageously heavy arrangements. Sometimes you wonder if the producer was trying to see how many instrumental tracks he could layer on at once.

This is by no means a jazz album. Even Albert's House was jazzier than this one. But there are a few fun tunes such as "Vehicle", "When I Die", and "You've Made Me So Very Happy". Chet sings on "Something", he has trouble staying on key, but he gets through it. His vocal on "Come Saturday Morning" gets so buried in the arrangement you can barely hear him. Consider this LP a "guilty pleasure" for Chet Baker fans.
