Shepp's musicianship was growing by leaps and bounds throughout the 1960s, and this album captures him at an early peak. The arrangements (by him & Roswell Rudd) are all fresh and invigorating, and the playing by all concerned is equally inspired. If Shepp's later Impulse albums show a bit more focus, that should not detract from the very real substance of earlier highlights such as this one, which also features the elusive Alan Shorter. Check it out and enjoy - it swings HARD!
